Information for Aspire: Five-Week Students with Active F-1 Status and Visa Sponsorship from Another US Institution

Updated on February 23rd, 2023

Students who are currently studying in the United States in F-1 status may or may not need an I-20 issued by Berklee, depending on whether they will return to their current school following the Aspire: Five-Week Music Performance Intensive.

I will return to my current school after Aspire: Five-Week

If you are currently studying in the US in F-1 status and you will return to your current school after Aspire: Five-Week, you do not need an I-20 from Berklee. However, we will need documentation of your current status from your international student advisor. Please write to summerinternational@berklee.edu to request our Vacation Semester Form to complete with your advisor and return to us.

If you are currently studying in the US in F-1 status and you will not return to your current school after Aspire: Five-Week, you will need an I-20 from Berklee. In addition to completing our standard I-20 Request, we will need you to complete an additional form with your current international student advisor. Please write to summerinternational@berklee.edu to request our SEVIS Transfer-In Form to complete with your advisor and return to us.

Information for F-1 Students on Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Students on OPT are typically ineligible to begin another credit-granting course without their OPT being terminated. The Aspire: Five-Week program is considered to be a full-time course of study and the curriculum is modeled to resemble a mini-semester at Berklee. It is not a recreational or enrichment program since you would be enrolled in academic courses in addition to performance courses. Students who participate receive grades and a transcript at the end of the program. With this in mind, if you are a student on OPT, you may wish to consult further with your current international student advisor since you are currently under their visa sponsorship, or an immigration attorney to determine the best course of action and ensure that your F-1 status and OPT are not jeopardized.
